The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will convene a hybrid virtual and in-person meeting of its Ecosystem Technical Committee Meeting from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, EDT on September 10, 2021. The meeting will be held at our Gulf Council offices located at 4107 W. Spruce Street, Suite 200, Tampa, FL 33607. The meeting will be broadcast via webinar and anyone who prefers not to travel at this time can attend virtually.
Technical Committees are special advisory panels made up of academics, agency, and industry personnel with expertise in relevant subject matter that can advise and assist the Council by reviewing relevant subject matter and providing recommendations. The mission of the Ecosystem Technical Committee is to incorporate ecological interactions into stock assessments and management goals based on objectives set forth by the Council. The Ecosystem Technical Committee will work with Council staff to support the development of the Council’s ecosystem-based fishery management plan. This plan will accommodate regional needs in the Gulf of Mexico while considering the existing National Ecosystem Plan and Regional Ecosystem Roadmap guiding principles.
During the meeting, the Technical Committee will receive a progress report from the contractor hired to develop a Fishery Ecosystem Plan (FEP) for the Gulf of Mexico. Discussion topics include fishery ecosystem issues, a review of potential indicators, and data visualization. The Technical Committee will then review case studies and lessons learned from other regional Councils’ FEP efforts and hear an update on the stakeholder mapping, engagement, and mental modeling portion of the project. In addition, the Technical Committee will receive a status update on the Council Coordination Committee Subcommittee on Area-Based Management.
Public comment will be held over the webinar before the meeting adjourns.
Webinar registration, meeting agenda, and meeting materials will be on our Technical Committee Meetings Page as soon as it’s available.
