The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will hold a two-day meeting of its Standing, Reef Fish, Socioeconomic, and Ecosystem Scientific and Statistical Committees (SSCs) on September 27 – 28, 2023.  The meeting will be held from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm EDT, each day at the Council Office located at 4107 West Spruce Street, Suite 200, Tampa, Florida 33607.

The Scientific and Statistical Committees will review research on gag grouper abundance, movement, spawning behavior, discard mortality, and environmental influences before discussing possible management modifications to the gag and black grouper stocks.  The SSC will also be presented with an interim analysis on gag and review the feedback it received from on-the-water anglers through the Fisherman Feedback tool.  The SSC will then review and recommend terms of reference for the planned benchmark stock assessment of Florida hogfish.

The SSC plans to review an interim analysis of vermilion snapper and review an updated catch analysis for lane snapper.  The SSC will also discuss the framework for reviewing Best Scientific Information Available in the Southeast Region, and consider the theory and methods used to incorporate social science theory into ecosystem assessments.
